Xeomin is an injectable cosmetic enhancement for aging skin. It also has several other limited medical uses for conditions involving muscle spasms. This drug is comparable to Botox. It is a purer form of botulinum toxin type A. Xeomin works by causing temporary loss of or reduction of underlying muscle movement. When the muscle contractions are diminished, so are the wrinkles. While primarily used for cosmetic purposes, Xeomin also has other medical indications. There are potentially serious side effects to Xeomin if the drug spreads to other areas of the body than where it was injected. These include difficulty swallowing and/or breathing, weakness, blurred vision and hoarseness. Other side effects include Itching, skin redness, swelling, wheezing, dizziness, dry mouth, and dry eyes. All side effects should be promptly reported to the treating physician. There is little or no downtime after Xeomin injections. Patients directly return to their usual activities and schedule. They are also advised not to rub or touch the injection sites for the same purpose. The positive benefits of Xeomin injections last for three to six months after treatment. The effects gradually fade over time. This drug should not be administered more often than every three months. Medical Insurance Coverage: When administered for purely cosmetic reasons, Xeomin is not covered by medical insurance.
