Purtox is a cosmetic injectable product that is expected to be available for use in the United States within the next 12 months, and is being developed to treat dynamic wrinkles and lines that form as a result of facial expression, such as frowning and smiling.
Like the popular Botox injectable product and the recently approved Dysport injectable, Purtox is derived from botulinum toxin which, when injected into the facial muscles, blocks nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract. As a result, the deep lines and wrinkles that occur when the muscles contract are prevented from forming.
Treatment with Purtox is expected to be similar to that used with Botox and Dysport, with results comparable to those achieved with Dysport. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes to complete in most men and women. A topical anesthetic may be used to numb the treatment area prior to injection, to minimize potential discomfort that may occur.
Following injection with Purtox, individuals may expect to see some temporary, slight redness and swelling, which resolve soon after treatment. Because Purtox has not been approved for use in the United States yet, definitive pricing information is not available. However, the cost of treatment with Purtox is expected to be comparable to that of Botox, which is generally a few hundred dollars per treatment.
